2011 is gone, and I can't honestly say that I miss it much.
Usually
umbran and I send the year off at a friend's party, and then celebrate New Year's Day by going out to brunch with friends. This year, though, the plans were a little bit different. In particular, we spent the last week in Disney World.
My awesome husband promised me a week somewhere warm this winter, and it turned out that the first week in January was the only one we could both reasonably take off. And after debating the merits and downsides of several different vacation destinations... we decided on the one that we knew would be easy, simple, and reliably fun.
So we flew down to Florida on New Year's Eve, and spent the actual turning of the year watching the most amazing fireworks display that I ever have seen and likely ever will see in my life. 2011 has been killed with fire, and with any luck this new year will be better.
The rest of the vacation was good. It wasn't perfect; while the rest of the country was having record warm temperatures, Florida was having record lows, so most evenings we spent hiding in our hotel room from the cold. Our one day in Universal Studios was spoiled by overcrowding and malfunctioning rides, and there's also an apparent limit to how much theme park I can consume.
On the other hand, I am a child of my generation, and walking into the Magic Kingdom and seeing Cinderella's Castle rising over everyone and everything.... that just somehow makes everything feel better. And no matter how old I get, I will still adore the 'It's A Small World' ride. And, because
umbran is a laid-back, reasonable, calm guy, he balanced my slightly frantic need to do everything with reminders that we were on vacation and by gosh were not setting alarm clocks or rushing through anything.
And there was dressing up Hollywood-style for dinner at the Brown Derby, and backstage tours of the hydroponic gardens in Epcot, and glittery face-paint, and the Tower of Terror, and shopping, and sunshine, and a whole lot of goodness. (Pictures will likely be forthcoming, if people care and if I can reind my husband to actually get them off the camera.)
And now we are home, and I am reacquainting myself with my cats and my own bed, and getting ready for work on Monday and Arisia next weekend. And the year, so far, is off to a good start....

Date: 2012-01-12 02:26 am (UTC)Let's plan on late Friday.
And, yep, I'll keep you company at the raffle table at times. Though, I feel it more likely you'll need to beat company off with a stick than be desperately looking for it. :)
