So, in the course of my failure to actually do anything I had planned to today, I wound up somehow at the Arlington farmer's market. And one of the stands there was selling fresh fava beans. I've never had fava beans before, but I've seen them referenced, and I like other sorts of beans, and I like trying new things, so on a whim I decided to pick some up.

Now all I need to do is figure out what to actually do with them. So, any suggestions? Advice? Favorite recipes? And, since it's well into farmer's market time, any other odd veggies I should try?

I believe the canonical accompaniments to fava beans are the liver of a census taker and a nice chianti. Since this isn't a census year, the first might be hard to come by, but I suspect something like filet mignon could be substituted.

I was so hoping someone would make the reference.

But that one's not bad as well. Add some grilled chicken.

Ann has a nice recipe for lima beans, asparagus, cheese, and mint. It might work with fava beans

This is a really simple way to prepare fava beans. You can use olive oil instead of butter if you're not trying to be a 16th century gentlewoman.

In Norma Nathan's book about Jewish cooking in France, she gives several recipes that originated in North Africa, where people eat them during Passover based on the claim that that's what was eaten during slaves in Egypt days.
