It is only now, too late, that I realize just how addictive manicures are.

You get one, and it's nice, and you like it, and you think, well, no big deal. I went years without one, it's a decent enough one-time treat.

But then you get used to it, and used to having tidy, pretty hands. And then it starts to wear off, and the polish chips, and your nails crack or grow out unevenly and eventually you wind up looking worse than before you started.

And, more than that, you're aware of it. Because by now you've started paying attention to your hands, and your nails, and how they look. And suddenly, even if it never bothered you before, you can't stand how ragged and ratty and untidy your nails are. And you start coming up with justifications to get it done again.

(Me? I have an interview at a new practice tomorrow. I *had* to get my nails done. I don't want to look unkempt.....)

Plus, well, it just makes me feel good. No matter how disorganized the rest of my life is, at least I have sparkly-perfect nails....

You know, I've heard that getting tattoos is addictive, too. :)

:P

Yes, I am substituting dependence on superficial external modification for dependence on unhealthy dieting, obsessive calorie counting, and abuse of diet pills as a way to feel good about my body.

On the whole, I still think this is a bit healthier....

And the results are so much prettier! But I agree completely; mani-pedis are necessary!

(Need to go schedule one.)

Those are, all, far less healthy ways to feel good about your body. And, it is a body that is well worth feeling good about.

For me, it's pedicures. I'm holding off right now because I have no reason to wear open-toed shoes, but the instant it is warm enough I will have a tough time not going for one every week, just because it makes me happy. Yay, sparkly nails! Pics?

I just spent ridiculous amounts on nail art pens...

Have you been using the funky bright colors?

Nothing wrong with a mani every couple weeks.. it's not like they are pricy, and the ego boost and sense of well-being is so worth it!

My new year's resolution was to get more manicures--in part because they make me feel so happy for so little effort, and in part because it keeps me from biting my nails.

I don't think it's such a bad thing. There's much worse addictions to have :)

That, plus, what's money for, really? Once you've got enough to live on, the excess is there to make you happy (which hopefully includes some level of saving for the future as well...). If it makes you happy for the price, then it's a good deal.

*sigh* I am definitely missing some of the "girl" genes. I just don't understand mani/pedicures. I just don't want goop on my body of any sort. I barely tolerate conditioner after shampoo! Remember I asked about mositurizer? I think I used it twice after Jon picked up something absolutely unscented. I just couldn't stand the touch of it.

At least I like pretty clothes. :)
