My Excitement For The Evening

So it's late-ish evening, and I'm curled up on the sofa with my husband, kinda tired because I had to get up for work at 6am but not quite ready to crash for the night. So I'm half-crocheting and half-watching tv and half-just snuggling, and suddenly both husband and I notice that the sirens we heard in the distance aren't in the distance anymore. And they're not stopping.
And I start to think that maybe my eyes aren't stinging from fatigue after all. And just as
umbran goes up to the front door and informs me that the street is closed off, and there's a ladder truck out front, I ask him, 'Do you smell smoke?'
Thankfully, our house is fine and so are we. But the underground utilities tunnels don't seem to be, as evidenced by the smoke coming out of the manhole cover about half a block down. Our entire street is blocked off by police cars, there's a giant fire hose hooked up to the hydrant in front of our neighbor's house, and the ambulances on standby are not making me feel quite as safe as I'm guessing they're supposed to.
I'm sure there's no real risk; no one has told us to get out of the house. And at least, thank goodness, the fire isn't in any of our neighbors' houses, which was our first concern. But still, I think I'm not quite tired anymore.....
