It's a perfect beach day - warm, clear, and bright, not overly hot or humid or windy. There are maybe half a dozen of us sprawled out on our towels, letting the sun bake the water from our bathing suits and the chill from our bodies after spending just enough time in the chilly but delightful ocean. Everything smells like salt water and sunscreen and home.
My legs are stretched out to take as much advantage of the sun as physically possible, and I'm resting my head and shoulders against my husband's shins, my arm leaning into another friend. I snuggle closer into
umbran and murmur to him, "Sing something to me."
He takes a moment to think, then quietly starts singing The 59th Street Bridge Song. I close my eyes and sigh happily, loving the sound of his voice and the feeling of peace and safety. By the chorus, I've started singing along, and by the second verse I realize I'm not the only one, until by the last line I am surrounded by music and love and the words, "Life, I love you - all is groovy."
And, at that moment, it's all true.
