So today was the last day of my cake-decorating class, at least for round one. And while I'm not actually good yet, I'll admit that I'm at least measurably better than I was.

In particular, I learned this week that buttercream ribbon roses are a lot easier to make than I had anticipated. Our final assignment was to design and decorate a cake using the techniques we learned through the class, and while I'm no master.... I'm at least willing to share what I made.

I'm still not very good at writing, especially freehand....

A little bit of a better look at the whole thing

And a close-up of the flowers. Please don't look at the writing....

So. Not bad, for a few weeks. Now I get a bit of a break, then on to fondant and gum paste....

That's excellent for only a few weeks!

I'll give you that the writing isn't so hot, but the flowers and leaves really do look nice.

The problem with this skill is that, like all skills, it takes practice. The problem is that while baking and decorating large numbers of cakes is possible, arranging for them to be humanly disposed of and properly appreciated is difficult.

Do you perhaps know an administrator or other person of authority at a middle or high school who can provide you with access to the required herd of voracious consumers?

A simpler solution might be making cupcakes for practice. :)

That's a really pretty cake! Even the writing is better than I've seen on a lot of Cake Wrecks. (BTW, if you want to bolster your self-esteem, go check out Cake Wrecks. Every single one of those cakes was professionally made and sold. Then look at the Sunday Sweets posts for inspiration.)

And again, remember that the primary purpose of a cake is to taste good, not to look perfect -- the latter is lagniappe.

Pretty! The drop flowers and leaves are especially nice.

The flowers are pretty.

If you have any reject cakes, I'll be happy to dispose of them for you. :)

For the record, I care about all cake, amateur and professional.

My sister started cake decorating about a year ago! What a nice coincidence!

(And what pretty flowers!)
