Breaking the curse

Yesterday was my birthday. It seems to have a kind of curse on it - for no reason I can discern, people seem to forget it. People with good memories, who are good friends. And the parties I've tried to organize all seem to fizzle, for no good reason.
So I was completely surprised by the party my sweetie put together for me today. Nothing huge, but huge parties aren't really my cup of tea. But a bunch of my friends came over, with a big cake shaped like a crown (complete with jujubee jewels), and we spent a pleasant day chatting and sharing memories and stories, and it was just right.
And this is completely separate from the lovely dinner I was treated to yesterday, or the cookies that a dear tech at work baked for me, or the flood of e-cards that I found in my mailbox, or the posts here. I don't know quite how or why, but it looks like the curse has been broken. If it weren't for the moderately heinous cold rotting away at my sinuses, this would be just about perfect. As it is, it's still amazing, and wonderful, and far more than I ever could have expected. The remembering, and the words of my friends, mean far more to me than any material gift ever could...
