Down Time

I am being a lazy slug tonight. I should be at dance practice right now, bouncing around and generally acting exuberant and enthusiastic and encouraging other people to join me in the act of recreating renaissance dance. Instead, I am sitting here at my computer, in my comfy crocheted socks, doing absolutely nothing of the sort.

I realized this afternoon that I haven't had the chance to eat a nice, sit-down dinner with my husband in longer than I can remember, and that I've had more fast-food, takeout, or cold sandwich dinners in the past two weeks than in the six months before then. I like being busy, and I like being useful, but there comes a point when I have a responsibility to myself and my sweetie to spend some downtime at home, too.

So tonight I'm shirking my social commitment in order to stay home and make an active effort to do nothing. Dinner has been had, and if it wasn't a fantabulous gourmet effort, at least it didn't come out of a can or the cold cut drawer. In a few minutes, we'll bake some homemade chocolate chip cookies, and curl up on the sofa with the cats to watch episodes of Veronica Mars and Battlestar Galactica that have been backing up while I spent the past few weeks driving myself to the brink of exhaustion.

I will not work on anything more arduous than cookie dough. I will not feel guilty about this, either. I may even manage more than six hours of sleep tonight. It's a tiny oasis of personal indulgence....

I would like to not that I feel that your hubby is your MOST IMPORTANT social commitment. You are not shirking social commitment, you are giving first priority to your more important social commitment. And loving commitment, and all that other good stuff.

Go you.

And, if I could wave a magic guilt-erasing wand for you, I'd do it.

*hugs*

just an opinion: not "personal indulgence" but "essential self care"...
