I really, truly love playing tourist.
I like going to new places; that's part of it. I like the idea of being somewhere different, and experiencing new things. But mostly I love the excitement and fun of wandering around exploring and playing and finding and discovering.
There's fun to be found in going off the beaten path, and seeking out the places that aren't famous... but sometimes what I really want, more than anything, is to wallow in the famous tourist attractions in any given place - wander in circles through museums with no time limit, so I can stand under the dinosaur bones or stare at pretty rocks or creepy bugs to my heart's content. Get distracted by plaques in front of random trees and sculptures on my way to lunch and wind up finding out that *this* cherry tree was planted on my birthday. Get up close and personal with monuments and secret gazebos and watch the people watching them, and wonder and think and soak up the sense of a place until it fills my brain.... or until my feet start rebelling and demanding a sit-down dinner.
In other, related news, having a butterfly land on your nose tickles incredibly, visiting war memorials the day after Veteran's Day is awe-inspiring, and the World War II Memorial is too pretty for its own good - in my mind, at least, war memorials should be a little more gritty and... I don't know, war-ish, and less lovely and pleasant. Oh, and the food at the Native American Museum is surprisingly good for museum cafeteria food.
Off, now, to pretend to be other people for a few days. More details to follow once I'm home and willing to take more time to write....
