Dear Brain:

You can either
A: Whine incessantly at me about how overweight we are, or
B: Whine incessantly at me about how annoying it is that our new Size 2 jeans don't fit because they're too baggy at the waist.

Choose one. You don't get to have it both ways; they just don't share a reality. And the jeans are a lot more objective.

I don't know about you, but I'm going to go put on a tight sweater and some lipgloss and enjoy a Good Hair Day while it's happening.

Love,
The Girl In The Mirror

Don't, please - everyone has a look that's right for them, and you're lovely and healthy at your shape.

My frame, unfortunately, doesn't carry extra weight well at all - it doesn't go to making me girl-shaped and curvy, it just kinda sits around my waist and thighs. I didn't mean to imply that other folks should try to look like what I think is right for me, and I'm sorry if what I said was hurtful... :(

Nah, it's OK. Don't even go there. I'm mildly insecure about my weight, that's all. (: Even though I know that a good chunk of it is muscle at this point.

*hugs* No hurt involved. Promise.

Oh. And. Since I have never seen you with extra weight, I will just say that I have always thought you look great and leave it at that. (:

Excellent way to handle this. I know what it feels like when your psyche plays these tricks. In Jazz class on Tuesday I had to repeatedly argue with my inner thoughts that seemed determined to make me ashamed of my ability, size, and performance. It doesn't make the inner thoughts go away completely, but it helped me get through it, and I'm glad I did.

If it's the slightest consolation, I've been starting to feel faintly happy about my body, and occasionally see a slim, elegant, even slightly gorgeous girl in the mirror (and wonder who she is and what she's doing in my bathroom). And my (only size 12, but I'm 5'10 and have a large frame) jeans don't fit, because the waist's too big.

At the same time, I'm worried about being horribly fat. Sigh. As you say, pick *one*...

I can't imagine either you or ladysprite being "horribly fat".

Honey, I could lose as much as you weigh, and no one would notice, including me.

There seem to be a conspiracy amongst jean manufacturers - you see the "ideal" of a curvy woman, but all the jeans have waistlines that would only fit a stick-straight female without a definable waist.

Me? I've collected a nice set of belts to get the waistlines to fit :-(

Stick-straight and neither sit down nor bend over since both those make waists gap horribly, at least on me. I tried jeans shopping yesterday, so the pain is still fresh.

You might want to try Lane Bryant's right fit jeans. They have three body types, stick-straight, slightly curved, and really curvy. I'm actually about halfway between the first two, which means that for the first time in my life I have jeans that are tighter in the hips than the waist rather than the other way around. The only thing is, Lane Bryant is for plus sizes. I wear about an 18 in normal sizes, a 14 in other Lane Bryant jeans, and a 2 in the right fit sizes, so the size 1's would be around a size 16. If you are smaller than this, you're out of luck.

A friend of mine is currently irate with the Gap for following the low-rider trend. Dagnabit, she doesn't want to look like Britney Spears...

Yay for positive self-assessment, especially when it comes coupled with good hair.
