Any baking endeavor that makes the person in front of you in the grocery line boggle at you in disbelief and surprise is bound to be a worthy one.

I have 48 hours, twenty pounds of flour, ten pounds of sugar, and six pounds of butter. My oven is preheating, and my stand mixer is armed. I've got my apron on, my hair tied back, and a marathon of Top Chef to keep me company.

Bring it on.

Actually, if you are buying the large size of anything in the assumption that it is the cheapest per unit, you need to check it out. I don't know whether it's a matter actual costs, or just trying to take advantage of people who assume and don't check. But for the last 5 years or so, I have noticed that the second largest size is often cheaper per unit than the largest.

Yes. It's weird. One time when I ran out of vanilla (?!) and had to buy it at the supermarket (rather than do the take-own-bottle-and-fill thing at the co-op, for better vanilla at lower price) I noticed that two 2-oz bottles were significantly cheaper than one 4-oz.

I am so, so obsessive about checking price-per-ounce or whatever unit of measure...
