As usual, I can't do anything by half-measures. I just returned from my local Urgent Care facility; apparently I have managed to catch the flu last week, and in the process of recovering from that came down with viral laryngitis, which then became superinfected with bacterial bronchitis.

The doctor didn't seem too concerned about me being contagious, but he also was fairly clear that it'll take quite some time for my voice to come back - and the more I try to use it, the longer it'll take. I'm out of work for at least today and tomorrow, possibly Wednesday as well. At that point, it'll depend on how the bronchitis is doing and how well I'm starting to recover. I'm under no illusions about my recovery; I know that as soon as I can I need to go back to work, and that because of that I'll be sounding like Marge Simpson for the next week or two, but such is life.

Right now I'm more frustrated than anything else. Until now, I've only had to call in sick twice over the past six years, and I'm feeling unprofessional and ashamed. Plus, this will be the second week in a row that I'm not able to work out - I made it through the dance on Saturday, but by now anything more active than puttering around the house is triggering crazy coughing fits - so I feel like a sedentary, blobby lump.

Luckily, I have books and crafting projects and DVDs to entertain me, and IM to let me communicate with the world, and I will survive this. That doesn't mean it's not irksome as hell, though.....

Having to call in sick does not make you unprofessional. I'm pretty sure you know this and would say the same to others, and I know how hard it is to take your own good advice sometimes. *hugs*

Ugh

Now I have images of you in your lab coat wearing a whiteboard around your neck ala the Hush episode of Buffy.

Ack! I'm sorry to hear that, it's pretty much exactly what I had...It comes back, take care of your throat and you will be OK...

Speaking as a potential client, I would far rather not be seen by medical personnel who are ill. I don't consider it unprofessional for doctors, veterinarians, and other care-givers to call in sick. Rather, I appreciate their consideration.

felis sidus says it all, it is only polite to call in when you are sick. There is no need to share your germs with the world. :} No need to feel guilty either when you really are sick.

Twice in six years is *so* far below the average, that a third time still leaves you as an extreme outlier of healthiness.

I had a sinus infection last week, and my workstudy boss emailed me on Tuesday (which I had spent mostly in the campus health center) to let me know that I might not be able to get into the planetarium until a half-hour or so after my shift was supposed to have started on Wednesday. I emailed back that I didn't know if I'd be well enough to show up the next day, but was going to see how the drugs rode through the night and would let him know in the morning, and he emailed back saying, in nicer words, "No, take the week off. We don't want your filthy plague." Admittedly, it's only workstudy, but still. Some bosses get it. :)

*hugs you warmly and healingly*

You've earned those sick days. Use them towards improving your health. :)

When you are used to talking lots, silence can be really irritating :)

I was thinking about giving you a call, but I don't think that would be very helpful right now! Ah, well, later *hugs*

Calling in sick is NOT unprofessional, especially when you have a doctor telling you to do so!
