This Is My Band Wagon. I Like To Jump On It.

Okay. Playing along because I've enjoyed coming up with questions for other folks, and imagining what my own answers would be, and because all the cool kids are doing it....

Fill in the blank.

"Hey LadySprite, what is your favorite____?"

And I will answer. Possibly creatively, and within the limits of what I feel like sharing with the world at large, but I will answer.

type of apple (for flavor)

[identity profile] ladysprite.livejournal.com 2010-07-08 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely Cortlands. There are others that I like, for baking, and Jonagolds are a close second, but for eating I adore how crisp and tart and just... perfectly apple-y they are. And nothing in the world tastes better than a Cortland that you *just* picked from the tree a minute ago.

In particular? There's a bare-eyed cockatoo named Bob who lives at one of the clinics where I work. He has fallen in love with me, and will sit on my shoulder throughout the day and babytalk to me and try to feed me. He's just charming and sweet beyond compare. (Apologies to my own snake; he's cool and mine and I love him, but Bob is just awesome.)

In general? I'm inordinately fond of turtles. There's something just delightful about stoic little walking rocks.

Ooh, tough one - mostly because I don't know if my first choice technically counts as a myth.

The first thing that pops into my head is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. I love the story and the complexity and the layering and imagery and the beauty of the language. But technically, I think that's a legend, and not a myth.

So if that doesn't count... I'm going to have to say Echo and Narcissus, only because it's the first one I ever learned. When I was little and found out that the flower for December babies was the narcissus, I had no idea what it was, and set out to learn all about it, and so I've felt faintly possessive and devoted to the story ever since.

Darjeeling - specifically, Stash Tea's Darjeeling. It has a richness that I can't quite describe, but that tastes... well, more tea-like to me, without being bitter or flat.

For everyday drinking, though, my go-to is Yorkshire Gold.

Easy - Donkeyskin.

I had a book of Perreault fairy tales when I was little, and for some reason this one just resonated with me, and I read it again and again and again. This was probably helped, at least in part, by the absolutely gorgeous illustrations of the princess's dress the color of the wind - I blame that at least in part for my participation in the SCA.

Even now, though, it still grabs me in ways that others don't, and when I'm reading retellings I search for versions of it.

wonder of science.

The human elbow joint.

I suppose that's more a wonder of biology, but hey, biology is a science. And elbows are just So. Freaking. Cool. The fact that it's a hinge, but that at the same time we can just twist so our hand is palm-up or palm-down - without bending, without involving our upper arm at all - it's the most amazing thing I can imagine! Utterly mind boggling, and evolution came up with it, and it's so useful and awesome and wow.....

He gets this look when he suddenly realizes something awesome and cool and exciting - usually either related to science or mischief (my husband has a stealthy but strong trickster streak) - a combination of 'wow!' and anticipation and excitement and humor that just lights up like a firecracker.... :)

way to spend a hot summer afternoon

[identity profile] ladysprite.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
In an air-conditioned movie theater, watching a big, blockbustery, fun, not-necessarily-too-thoughtful movie, complete with popcorn, artificial butter flavor, overpriced soda, and a friend or friends. Ideally followed by going out for ice cream and rehashing all the awesome bits of the movie.

Want to go see Toy Story 3 this weekend? :)

The more chunks of heath bar, the better. Served on a sugar cone, with chocolate sprinkles.

bad movie

[identity profile] ladysprite.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Although it's more an homage than an accidentally-awful movie, I have to go with The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra.

It's brilliant. It's amazing. It's so far over the top that it's outside the atmosphere. And it's made with so much love and enthusiasm that I can't help but feel that same love and enthusiasm myself.

Plus, it's in my top-five quotable movies of all time....

Doing my best not to grumble or make faces as I answer this....

My potential for joy and enthusiasm. As much as I tend to be negative about myself, in general I tend to have a positive outlook on life. I've managed to dodge jadedness and cynicism, and even when I'm generally miserable I find it fairly easy to fall into delight and happiness, to enjoy things, and to generally find things around me to be awesome.

I am skilled at boom-de-yada-ism.

kind of character to LARP?

[identity profile] ladysprite.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to enjoy dramatic and emotional characters. They don't need to have a specific emotional flavor - they can be angsty, or angry, or afraid, or happy, but I like characters with a strong emotional core.

My true ideal would be a character with a complex romance plot, a strong emotional core, and the potential for a lot of drama and a little spotlight, ideally shared with a couple other strong roleplayers.....

[identity profile] ladysprite.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
For owning? Mutts. I know they're not a breed, but they're a category, at least.

Just in general? Borzois. They are absolutely, utterly drop-dead gorgeous, and elegant, and sweet. They're also utterly useless, rather dumb, and fairly obscure and uncommon, but they're just so pretty... they're the sort of dog you get because they accessorize well with your velvet chaise lounge, not because you want a pet to romp and play with.

La Volta.

It combines my love of showing off, high energy dance, partner dancing with contact, and being picked up and tossed into the air. Plus, it's scandalous and unhealthy, according to the elders of the age.

... punctuation mark?

[identity profile] ladysprite.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Semicolons. They're underappreciated and underutilized; also, I love what they can do for varying sentence structure. Plus, they're two things in one - a hideous Frankensteinian amalgam of comma and colon. What more could you ask for in a grammatical tool?

Food...can be item or cuisine

[identity profile] ladysprite.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
You might ding me for this not being an officially recognized cuisine, but I have to answer with Thankgsiving food.

I think of it as a cuisine, in that there are a spectrum of standard food items that are included in it that are related and go together, and it's absolutely my favorite class of food, both to cook and to eat.

Turkey, and stuffing, and mashed potatoes, and green beans, and cranberry sauce, and desserts made with pumpkin and apple, and just about anything else that can even vaguely fit under the umbrella of the holiday.

(Except pearl onions. I'll never like those.)

Oh, this is a tough one, but fun....

I have a tendency towards certain letters and syllables, that I just love the mouthfeel of, but picking one word....

Delight. I love the sound and shape of it, and it's one of those words where the sound and the meaning just seem to mesh perfectly.

I have a decorative scarf that I crocheted for myself - it's made of this utterly beautiful silk yarn, variegated in shades of blue and green and purple and beaded with tiny crystal beads, and the pattern is a thin, delicate series of scallops and waves.

It feels like wearing a piece of the ocean wrapped around me, and while it's utterly non-useful in a practical way, it's beautiful and I love it.

Transporters. Large parts of the frustration and wishfulness in my life come from living so far away from both people and things I want to see.

There's a part of me that worries that if we did have access to instant transportation, that far-away things would no longer be as exciting or special, but... that's a risk I'm willing to take. At least in my imagination.

Halloween costume, which you wore.

[identity profile] ladysprite.livejournal.com 2010-07-09 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had some pretty amazing costumes, but my favorite would have to be the one my mom made me when I was in third grade.

I had a copy of Gnomes (http://www.amazon.com/Gnomes-Wil-Huygen/dp/0810909650), and it was my favorite book. And that year my mother made me a gnome costume - long green skirt, fluffy blouse, pointy hat, braids down to my waist. Every detail was perfectly matched to the illustrations in the book, and I loved it....
