So Valentine's Day is nearly upon us. And my husband, bless his heart, is a traditionalist.
However, I am at best a nibbler when it comes to candy, and for some reason this past holiday season was a heavily-chocolate one, so my house is still full of chocolates. Godiva chocolates from my Christmas stocking, chocolate-covered toffees that my mom sent for my birthday, mini peanut butter cups that I bought for cookie baking, gourmet hand-dipped chocolate truffles and caramels from an outing to a chocolatier with a friend....
My life is so hard, I know.
So. The last thing I need right now is more chocolate. But I know my better half, and I know he will insist on getting me *something* edible and and romantic for the holiday. But.... I'm not usually a candy person, so I have no idea of what to even suggest.
So - what are your favorite non-chocolate candies and goodies?

Pecan brittle.
Eclairs, napoleons, canoli. Little tiny pastry fruit tarts filled with custard. Caramels - really good ones.
And I happen to love the Amaretto and Ginger&Wasabi Lollypops from Lollyphile, but they are not for everyone. However, they do have a wide assortment of other flavors. (The Ginger&Wasabi ones are *great* for when I have an upset tummy.)

Exotic fruit that would be good companion pieces to chocolate... pears, starfruit.. and gourmet cheeses... so the two of you could have some decadent nosh together.

Date: 2011-02-10 06:03 pm (UTC)To some extent, this depends on whether you're looking just for candy or for anything edible, and what your preferences are in food. There are frequently gourmet assortments of pretzels/popcorns/etc. that are flavored.
If you do any candymaking or baking, maybe you can convince him to get something you would use in it? (Or, hey, edible gold leaf!) If not, I am fond of jellies which are, uh, kind of high-class gummy candies. There are some that are sour that I like a lot, just because they counter the traditional sweetness of candy. Some of the really good quality dried fruit is excellent too, if you're looking for something a little different.
