So Valentine's Day is nearly upon us. And my husband, bless his heart, is a traditionalist.

However, I am at best a nibbler when it comes to candy, and for some reason this past holiday season was a heavily-chocolate one, so my house is still full of chocolates. Godiva chocolates from my Christmas stocking, chocolate-covered toffees that my mom sent for my birthday, mini peanut butter cups that I bought for cookie baking, gourmet hand-dipped chocolate truffles and caramels from an outing to a chocolatier with a friend....

My life is so hard, I know.

So. The last thing I need right now is more chocolate. But I know my better half, and I know he will insist on getting me *something* edible and and romantic for the holiday. But.... I'm not usually a candy person, so I have no idea of what to even suggest.

So - what are your favorite non-chocolate candies and goodies?

Foot massage.

I don't think foot massages qualify as edible, unless you get one of these.

Gummi bears/worms/animals! Lots of colors! Funny shapes!

It is hard to be sad around gummi bears.

Marzipan. Gummy things (I'm partial to gummy cherries) or their higher-class cousin, fruit pastes. Nut brittle. Licorice.

Seconded on the marzipan. Also, Jordan almonds (which are rather like crack for me.)

Maple-sugar candies.

Pecan brittle.

Eclairs, napoleons, canoli. Little tiny pastry fruit tarts filled with custard. Caramels - really good ones.

And I happen to love the Amaretto and Ginger&Wasabi Lollypops from Lollyphile, but they are not for everyone. However, they do have a wide assortment of other flavors. (The Ginger&Wasabi ones are *great* for when I have an upset tummy.)

Sfogliatelle. I believe both of the Really Good pastry shops in the North End sell them.

A sweet red wine that goes well with Chocolate.
Fine coffee that goes well with Chocolate.
Exotic fruit that would be good companion pieces to chocolate... pears, starfruit.. and gourmet cheeses... so the two of you could have some decadent nosh together.

Really good tea, honey, perhaps a tea set for 2 to go with it, some fancy cookies or little cakes, and a poem.

The definition of "edible" that some of the respondents to this entry are using has me concerned. *grin*

To some extent, this depends on whether you're looking just for candy or for anything edible, and what your preferences are in food. There are frequently gourmet assortments of pretzels/popcorns/etc. that are flavored.

If you do any candymaking or baking, maybe you can convince him to get something you would use in it? (Or, hey, edible gold leaf!) If not, I am fond of jellies which are, uh, kind of high-class gummy candies. There are some that are sour that I like a lot, just because they counter the traditional sweetness of candy. Some of the really good quality dried fruit is excellent too, if you're looking for something a little different.

I am amused that he is traditional = edibles rather than traditional = flowers.

Oh, there will be flowers too. :) But there will also be edibles. I just don't have to worry about having too many flowers or how to dispose of them appropriately.....

I truly am spoiled rotten by my husband, and I have no idea of how I got so lucky.

I have low-class tastes. Good 'n' Plentys. They're even color-appropriate for Valentine's Day, being pink and white! And you can play Charlie Choo-Choo with the box...

I just bought a box of Good 'n'Plentys yesterday. I'd forgotten how tasty and licorice-y they are!

I've never seen one of these "floral arrangements" made from fruit in person, but they look interesting.

Or how about something made with candied flowers?

Maybe some really good assortment of cheeses, fruits/something and bread? I remember a couple of friends doing that with me when none of us wanted to cook but we all wanted something decadent - we went to whole foods and raided the cheese, bread and olive sections.

If not chocolate then caramel, although really good caramels are often coated with chocolate.

Perhaps a jar of dulce de leche to dunk apples in.

Gelee? Usually fruit flavored, I think, but I have seen tea and wine flavored.

Young chevre and buckwheat honey on gingersnaps.

Lemon stilton and apples.

Regarding the caramel issue... if you do some shopping around at gourmet candy outlets, I *HIGHLY* recommend caramels with sea salt. It sounded odd to me when I first heard about it, but the distinctive flavors that are present in sea salt blend very effectively with the sweet, buttery, almost nutty flavors of good caramel.

Husband went to the local "interesting and cool foods" shop and brought home gifties for V-day for both me and the kid: "red hots" cinnamon hearts for me and gummy bears for her.

He also brought home a lovely assortment of tea for the upstairs tea stash (and absconded with his stuff for the downstairs tea stash).

Edible Arrangements does fruit baskets carved like flowers, and no doubt they'll be doing something cool for a Valentine's Day basket. I've never used them so I've got no idea what they'll be like as a company, but it would be healthy and pretty and edible!

Burdick's has an absolutely amazing fruit jelly candy. Or he could go all out and get the the trio of marzipan, nougat, and the fruit candy.

I love the fruit candy. It's not only delicious, it's pretty. You can see it here (http://www.burdickchocolate.com/item-group.asp?C112=Other-Confections)
